How to avoid dry skin problems with our Dry Skin Balm
Dry skin is a common enough condition that will be experienced by us all in varying different degrees throughout our lives. Most of us don’t ever have to think about dry skin until early June, July when we realise that we are two weeks away from our Summer hols and that we are going to have to bare our legs and feet to the rest of the world for the first time in a while. For others though dry skin can be a little more serious and troublesome. Symptoms can vary from severe itching , scaly dry patches, redness that then starts to scab, fine cracks in the skin as well as cracked heals. These are the signs of Xeroxes Cutis or severe dry skin. The good news is that by understanding the causes behind dry skin and introducing regular self-care throughout the year at home most of us should be able to avoid that last minute holiday panic and enjoy beautiful well hydrated skin all year round.
Understanding what causes dry skin and what we can do alleviate the symptoms.
There are several factors that can lead to dry skin. The most common cause is a lack of moisture in the air due to cold weather or low humidity at home caused by having our heating turned up during these cold periods. Our skin is considered to be the largest organ in our body so don’t forget to drink plenty of water throughout the day - lack of water is another big reason for dry skin problems. Keeping our skin hydrated helps to keep the essential balance of natural oils and minerals needed to support healthy vibrant skin cells. Other causes of dry skin can be sun damage, using harsh soaps and taking baths or showers that our too hot.
To alleviate these symptoms try some of the following
Create a self care program that is easy to incorporate into your life and that you can stick to - everybody should think about doing this, the key is - It has to be easy ! ! ! its about doing the little things on a regular basis that helps to improve your overall wellbeing . These things take time, so lets look at some little changes that are going to help with maintaining healthy and youthful-looking skin.
Drink plenty of water to keep your skin hydrated, buy a reusable water bottle and set a couple of reminders on your phone to use it through out the course of the day. When you have established the habit and it has become second nature then you can switch off the reminders. They say it takes at least 21 days to form a new habit for me it takes at least 2 months.
Use natural products twice daily wherever possible. Healing Alternatives has created a natural skincare line that includes a Cleanser and Face Cream which can be used both morning and at night to cleanse, nourish and protect your skin from free radicals and other environmental damage as well as a hard balm for any dry skin problems. The Dry Skin Balm is packed with natural goodness and combines six powerful ingredients. Mango Seed Butter, Coconut Oil, Cocoa Seed Butter, Cannabidiol, Sweet Almond Oil and Jojoba Seed Oil.
Mango Seed Butter is extracted from the seeds of mangoes and is rich in antioxidants like Vitamin A and Vitamin E. It helps to reduce inflammation and restore hydration levels by locking moisture into the skin.
Coconut oil is another great source of Vitamin E which helps to protect your skin from free radicals and boosts collagen production. Not only does this oil moisturise the skin but it also has antibacterial properties.
Cocoa seed butter is derived from cocoa beans with an incredibly high concentration of fatty acids which helps to make your skin look softer, smoother and more youthful.
Cannabidiol (CBD) is another powerful antioxidant which helps to reduce inflammation whilst soothing redness . It also contains fatty acids that will help keep your skin feeling hydrated all day long!
Sweet almond oil contains vitamins A, B1, B2, B6 and E which work together to repair damaged cells.
Finally, jojoba seed oil contains an array of beneficial minerals like magnesium and zinc which act as natural disinfectants on the surface of your skin. Plus, it's non-comedogenic so won't block pores or cause breakouts!
Instead of using piping hot water when you bath or shower try to use lukewarm water instead keep your bath times to around 20mins. Be gentle on your skin when using a flannel or sponge and the same goes to when drying pat instead of rubbing when using your towel.
The other important factor which we always like to encourage is focusing on improving the quality of your Sleep. Whilst we are asleep is when the magic happens our skin starts to self heal so my one tip to help improve the quality of your sleep is to fix a time you go to bed and stick to it. Use the old reminders on your phone trick to help you.
If you are struggling with your sleep then please check out our Sleep Easy range and the additional help and advice in the H:A journal on our website.

I always like to try to answer the most frequent questions I get asked about Dry Skin at fairs we attend so here goes…
Dry Skin vs Eczema vs Psoriasis: What's the Difference?
It’s important to understand the difference between dry skin, eczema, and psoriasis. While they all have similar symptoms—dryness, redness of the skin—they are caused by different factors. Dry skin is usually caused by environmental factors such as cold weather or low humidity as well as lifestyle factors such as taking hot showers or using harsh chemicals on your body. Eczema is an inflammatory condition that is often triggered by allergens. Psoriasis is a chronic autoimmune condition that causes the immune system to attack healthy cells in the body resulting in dry patches of skin.
