From Field to Bottle: The English Ladybird Lavender Behind Our Products

If you have used more than one Healing Alternatives product, there is a good chance you will already recognise one of our signature ingredients.
English Ladybird Lavender appears in more than ten of our formulations, from our bestselling Sleep Easy collection and award-winning bath salts to our Lavender Massage Wax, Face Cream, Calm Crown Roll-On, Renewal Balm and everyday hand care.
We do not use lavender simply because it is familiar. It has a long history in herbalism and aromatherapy, where it has traditionally been valued for calm, rest and emotional balance. Modern research continues to explore the relationship between inhaled lavender, stress, anxious feelings and sleep.
Lavender also performs an important role within a blend. It can soften sharper essential oils, balance more stimulating botanicals and provide a calm, grounding element within a complex formulation.
Across our range, we pair lavender with different botanicals for specific reasons: with clary sage and marjoram in our sleep products, peppermint in Calm Crown, pine and lemon in an invigorating bath blend, neroli in our Face Cream, and rosemary in our everyday hand care.
That versatility explains lavender’s place across the Healing Alternatives range. In each formulation, it is chosen for its own aromatic and wellbeing properties, for the way it works with other botanicals, or for both. As with every ingredient we use, its role must be clear and relevant to the purpose of the finished product.
The quality of the lavender therefore matters enormously.
We source ours from Castle Farm in Kent, the family-run farm that grows and distils English Ladybird Lavender. We recently visited the farm to follow one of our most important ingredients back to its source.
What Makes English Ladybird Lavender Different?
Not every lavender oil smells or performs in the same way.
The species, variety, growing conditions, timing of the harvest and distillation process can all influence the finished oil. Some lavender oils can be sharp, medicinal or overly sweet.
English Ladybird Lavender has a softer, more rounded and distinctly floral aroma, with a smooth, gently warming and almost honeyed quality.
As a pure Lavandula angustifolia oil, it retains the naturally occurring aromatic constituents associated with true lavender, including linalool and linalyl acetate. These are among the constituents studied in relation to lavender’s calming aromatic character.
Ladybird is a variety unique to Castle Farm. The farm began growing lavender in 1998 as part of a move away from commercial hop growing, but what began as crop diversification developed into a long-term breeding programme.
Working with a specialist plant breeder, Castle Farm developed and assessed around 200 potential varieties. They were evaluated for aromatic profile, resilience, flowering behaviour and consistency of yield.
Only a small number progressed to field trials. Years of growing, harvesting, distillation and further assessment followed before Ladybird emerged as the exceptional variety.
The resulting essential oil is 100% pure Lavandula angustifolia, single-origin and exclusive to Castle Farm. It gives us the characteristic qualities for which true lavender is valued, together with the softer, more refined aromatic profile we want in our formulations.

Why We Use Lavender in Different Formulations
Lavender is often associated with sleep, but its use within Healing Alternatives is much broader.
Sometimes it is included for its direct aromatic and wellbeing role. In other formulations, its purpose is to balance the effects and fragrance of the botanicals around it.
Several of these products also carry the MTick: GenM’s independently certified symbol for menopause-friendly products. The certification assesses how a product can support one or more of the 48 recognised signs of menopause. It does not claim to cure menopause; it helps consumers identify products that have met GenM’s independent criteria. Learn how the MTick works.
Sleep and Evening Use
We use lavender throughout the Sleep Easy collection because of its long-established association with calm, rest and sleep. Used consistently before bed, its familiar aroma can help promote a calmer state and become a recognisable signal that it is time to switch off and prepare for sleep.
Our original CBD Bath Salts with Lavender and Clary Sage combine English Ladybird Lavender with the warm, herbaceous character of clary sage, mineral-rich Dead Sea salts and broad-spectrum CBD.
Lavender provides the calm, grounding foundation. Clary sage adds warmth and depth, while bathing in warm mineral salts provides a natural way to release the physical tension accumulated during the day.
Our Sleep Easy CBD Bath Salts use the same botanical combination but contain a higher concentration of broad-spectrum CBD. They were developed specifically for sleep, particularly for people who find it difficult to switch off when stress or anxious feelings continue into the evening.
These award-winning salts are also MTick certified as menopause-friendly, recognising their intended support for sleep difficulties experienced during menopause.
In our Sleep Easy CBD Bath Oil, lavender and clary sage are blended with sweet almond and sunflower oils. The essential oils provide the calming aromatic element, while the botanical oils soften and nourish the skin.
Our Sleep Easy CBD Balm pairs lavender with sweet orange. Lavender provides the grounding base, while orange introduces warmth and a gentle brightness. Applied to pulse points before bed, the fragrance is experienced at close range.
The Sleep Easy CBD Roll-On combines lavender with marjoram. Marjoram has a warm, herbaceous character that complements lavender without overpowering it. The roll-on can be applied to pulse points before bed, while travelling or whenever it is difficult to settle.

Our award-winning Sleep Easy CBD Pillow Spray combines lavender with fresh peppermint. Lavender provides calm and familiarity, while peppermint adds a clean freshness that prevents the bedroom fragrance from becoming heavy or overly sweet.
Together, the collection offers several ways to incorporate the same English lavender into a consistent approach to preparing for sleep.
Bath, Body and Massage
Lavender does not always need to be the dominant ingredient.
Our Pumilio Pine, Lavender and Lemon Bath Salts were created as a more revitalising blend. Pumilio pine provides a clean, resinous freshness, while lemon adds brightness. Lavender tempers both, preventing the blend from becoming too sharp.
The result is restorative rather than sleep-led: fresh enough to revive the senses, but balanced by lavender’s calmer aromatic character.

This is a particularly good example of why lavender is valuable in formulation. Its purpose is not to make the product smell predominantly of lavender, but to control and complete the relationship between the three essential oils.
The product is a Platinum Beauty Award winner and is MTick certified for its menopause-friendly credentials.
Developed with professional massage therapists, our Lavender Massage Wax uses English Ladybird Lavender as its sole essential oil. Its fragrance comes entirely from the plant, without synthetic fragrance.
Massage provides the physical action through pressure, warmth and controlled movement. Lavender supports the mental and emotional side of the treatment by creating a calm, grounding aromatic environment.
Its purpose is to work alongside the massage—not to take credit for the physical action of the therapist’s hands.
Face, Skin and Targeted Wellbeing
In our CBD Face Cream, lavender is blended with neroli, sea buckthorn, grapeseed oil, aloe and other conditioning ingredients.
The botanical oils, emollients and humectants provide the principal moisturising benefits. Lavender and neroli contribute a balanced botanical fragrance that makes the cream pleasant to use morning and evening without relying on synthetic fragrance.
Lavender also has a specific role in our award-winning Calm Crown Roll-On, where it is paired with peppermint and broad-spectrum CBD.
Lavender has a long traditional association with nervous tension and headaches, while peppermint provides an immediate cooling sensation. Within the finished formulation, lavender balances peppermint’s intensity and adds a calmer dimension to its cooling freshness.
The result is a compact pulse-point product designed to provide cooling comfort during moments of tension. Calm Crown is also MTick certified for supporting wellbeing during menopause.
In our Renewal Balm, lavender works alongside tea tree, pomegranate, sea buckthorn, coconut oil and sweet almond oil.
Tea tree provides the sharper, cleansing aromatic character, while lavender softens the blend. Pomegranate, sea buckthorn and the carrier oils help nourish and care for dry or uncomfortable skin.
Lavender therefore has two distinct functions within Renewal Balm: it contributes to the botanical character of the formulation and brings balance to the more assertive aroma of tea tree.

Everyday Hand Care
Our Lavender and Rosemary Hand Wash and Hand Cream bring English Ladybird Lavender into products used repeatedly throughout the day.
Rosemary has a green, herbaceous and naturally invigorating character. Lavender softens it and gives the blend greater balance, producing a fragrance that feels clean and fresh without becoming harsh or clinical.
The hand wash cleanses without leaving the skin feeling stripped. The hand cream uses aloe, sunflower oil, shea butter and cocoa butter to soften and condition the hands, while lavender and rosemary leave a light botanical fragrance.
Here, lavender’s role is straightforward: it balances the rosemary and makes a frequently used product more pleasant without overwhelming the senses.
Seeing the Process Firsthand
Walking through the fields and visiting the distillery at Castle Farm showed us how much the quality of an essential oil depends on decisions made before it reaches the formulator.
The variety, growing conditions, point of harvest and distillation process all affect the finished oil. These differences matter when the same oil is being used across more than ten separate formulations.
Seeing the process confirmed why we source directly from a grower with control over the lavender from breeding and cultivation through to distillation.
For Healing Alternatives, provenance is not simply about being able to name the farm. It gives us consistency, traceability and confidence in an ingredient used throughout a significant part of our range.
From the Lavender Fields of Kent to Everyday Use
Every time you use one of our lavender formulations, you are using an ingredient with a traceable origin: developed over many years, grown in the Kent countryside and distilled on the farm.
English Ladybird Lavender provides the qualities we need from true lavender together with the softer, rounded profile that distinguishes our products.
Whether it is used to prepare for sleep, balance a revitalising bath blend, accompany massage, soften a skincare formulation or provide cooling comfort alongside peppermint, it is included for a defined purpose.
That is how we approach every Healing Alternatives formulation: each ingredient selected for what it contributes, both individually and as part of the complete product.
